A Brand New Year!

Welcome to the 2015 school year! Today was the first day of Term 1 for many state schools in Victoria. There was lots of excitement in 5/6 Team as we saw our friends again, shared our holiday news and settled into our classroom.

We began by watching the short clip below from YouTube.  Thanks YouTube!

We decided the following main messages were in the clip:

* When you work in a group you can do more than when you work by yourself

* A big obstacle becomes much smaller when you are part of a team or group

* Groups members should look after other group members

In a nutshell…

Together Everyone Achieves More!

We will be working together as the 5/6 Team this year. We played ‘Toilet Paper Truths’ so we could get to know the people in our team. This is how you play:

1. Sit in a circle

2. Pass a roll of toilet paper around the circle

3. Each person takes as many sheets as they want. At this point in the game, no one knows why they are taking the sheets or what they will do with them

4. When everyone has some sheets, each person shares one fact for each sheet

Here are some of the things we found out about the 5/6 Team members:

* Someone has seven ferrets

* Two people have five cats

* Someone did a backflip for the first time during the holidays

* Someone races motorbikes in competitions

During the next few days we will be making decisions about how we will learn and act in our classroom. Today we brainstormed and decided on our ‘Class Code’ or ‘Class Constitution’. It is a set of rules we will follow to make sure we make the most of every opportunity. Did you know that Australia has a constitution? It was created in 1901 and has eight chapters. Ours is a bit newer and shorter!

5/6 Team Class Constitution

In 5/6 Team, we agree to:

* Treat people with respect by talking politely, using school appropriate words and listening when others are talking

* Respect our classroom environment by keeping it clean and tidy

* Be honest, trustworthy and take responsibility for our actions

* Include everyone, work as a team and make people feel welcome

* Focus on our work and stay on track

* Be willing to learn new things and try new tasks enthusiastically

* Use ‘five star’ effort for all tasks and parts of learning

* Encourage classmates and celebrate achievements

* Complete tasks by deadlines

We had to make sure we agreed completely with the dot points because we have to sign and follow the document.

Today we also decided upon what makes ‘Five Star Bookwork’. You can read our expectations below:

The day was over before we knew it. We are looking forward to a year full of learning and fun. We hope you will share our year with us through this blog!

When do you work in teams?

What do you enjoy most about the first day of a new school term?

What advice do you have to make our year the best year ever?

Hi 5/6 Team,
It looks like you had an incredibly busy first day back. I hope to still see those big smiles on your faces throughout the term.
As a teacher we HAVE to work in teams because without someone to share the workload with we would all go CRAZY!!!! I like working with people that are organised, like me and who like starting a task early so they don’t have to worry about it later.
The thing I like best about the first day of the year and getting to see all the people I haven’t seen for 5 weeks. I also like to meet new friends.
To have a great year, my advice would be to keep trying, even when things are tough, understand that school is supposed to be challenging and to make sure you keep the friendships you already have, but also make new friends too.
All the best for a very successful 2015.
Miss Varker 😉

Wow! What a start to the year. You have already proven yourself to be extremely productive, achieving so much on your first day.
One of my jobs as a principal is to establish teams of teachers to work together on different aspects of the school organisation. We have a leadership team which has five members. This team works closely with me to make major decisions about what is happening in the school. One of the most important roles for this team is to establish professional development programs for all of our teachers. This is very important as we recognise that we can always learn more and do things better no matter how long we have been in a job. Teachers at UPPS are always trying to improve their practice and knowledge so that you are getting the best education that you can. Often when you go home from school our teachers will get together as a team and start doing their own learning. That’s impressive I think!!!

The thing I liked the most about our first day at school was seeing how excited and happy students were to be back. Listening to the holiday stories and watching the friends catch up after the long break was great.

My advice for this year is to have a mindset that is focused on accepting challenge as the way that you improve and learn. Look forward to facing something that is difficult and say to yourself “I can’t do this YET!” not “I can’t do this or its too hard”

Have a blast this year!

Mrs Laffan

Welcome back, Team 5/6!
It’s great to see you working together already towards shared goals. I’m hoping that perhaps we can ‘team’ up together as classrooms on opposite sides of the world to do some collaborative long-distance team work! I’m really excited to see what you get up to this year – and really happy that our blogging partners are back from their long break!
Here’s to a great year ahead

Hi Mrs Monaghan, it is Brent.

It would be good to work together as a team. We could do a lot of things with our classes. I think our grade will be doing a lot this year so it will be a very busy year. We might be able to work together.

Bye for now
From Brent

Hi Mrs Monaghan

I am also looking forward to a great school year. I can’t wait until we do lots of projects together. What type of project do you think we should do together this year?

Hi Miss Joy and 1/2J,

We have had a wonderful time. I love being a Grade 5 with the Grade 6s so I do think it is cool.

I hope you like my comment.

Bye and see you later 🙂

From Michael

Hello everyone,

I think this year will be a great year but a busy one as well. I’m in grade 6 and I have to do a lot this year because of memory book and things to do with graduation like graduation speeches.

Some places where you might work in teams at a work site, school, sports and at home/ house.

Some things I enjoy most about the school year is….
-Getting to see friends and all of the teachers
-Finding out what the teachers have planned for the year ahead
-Finding out who is school/house/JSC captains
-Meeting my buddies (the preps are cute and funny)
-Learning new things about people in TEAM week
-Meeting all of the new kids

Bye for Now,
Olivia
